Roundtable Discussions

From the October 1936 Catholic Worker

We need Round-Table Discussions
to keep trained minds from being academic.

We need Round-Table Discussions
to keep untrained minds from being superficial.

We need Round-Table Discussions
to learn from scholars
how things would be,
if they were as they should be.

We need Round-Table Discussions
to learn from scholars
how a path can be made
from things as they are
to things as they should be.”

– Peter Maurin

Roundtable Discussions are a key technique for “clarification of thought,” the first pillar of the Catholic Worker’s program for the reconstruction of the social order.

February

Roundtable Discussion on Redemptive Lending at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Worker (1440 Market Street), Sunday, February 22 at 4 p.m.

The Jubilee Year–like the one we just celebrated calls for a forgiveness of debts. It’s a reminder that a Christian economy has a higher calling to mirror God’s economy of grace and honor the human dignity of each person than simply to seek profit. Come learn about how Catholic parishes have been putting this economy into practice across the country and how you can as well! Read more about the program here.

March

“How I wish for a Church that is poor and for the poor!” Pope Francis said in March 2013, during the first week of his pontificate. 50 years before that, several Catholic bishops gathered together to commit themselves to being a Church that loves Holy Poverty and loves the poor. Come learn about that “Pact of the Catacombs” and how we can live in that spirit today.  Read more about the Pact of the Catacombs here.
